In UX research, we often ask: “Which design works best for users?” While qualitative methods help us uncover why users struggle, A/B testing allows us to validate those findings at scale and connect them directly to business outcomes.
What Is A/B Testing in UX Research?
A/B testing (also called split testing) is a controlled experiment where you compare two or more design variants to see which one performs better against a defined goal.
Variant A: Current design (control).
Variant B: New design (treatment).
By showing different versions to different users and measuring behavior, researchers can quantify the impact of design changes.
Why UX Researchers Should Care About A/B Testing
For years, A/B testing lived primarily in the world of growth teams and marketers. But as UX researchers, we bring a critical perspective:
Ensuring tests are designed ethically and measure true user experience, not just clicks.

The A/B Testing Process
1. Define the Research Question
A test should start with a clear, user-centered hypothesis:

2. Select Metrics
Choose metrics that align with both user success and business goals:
Conversion metrics (purchases, sign-ups).
Engagement metrics (time on task, feature adoption).
Experience metrics (error rate, satisfaction scores).
3. Design Variants
Ensure differences are meaningful but isolated:
Variant A: shipping cost shown at checkout.
Variant B: shipping cost shown on product page.
4. Run the Experiment
Randomly assign users to A or B.
Ensure enough sample size for statistical confidence.
Run long enough to account for variation (days of week, time of day).
5. Analyze Results
Look for statistical significance — but don’t stop there.
Pair quantitative results with qualitative observations (e.g., user interviews explaining why Variant B felt clearer).
6. Report Findings
Frame the outcome in terms of both UX impact and business ROI:
“Variant B reduced checkout abandonment by 15%, equating to ~$2.1M projected annual revenue.”

Testing without a hypothesis: fishing for wins instead of solving problems.
Focusing only on clicks: missing deeper measures of usability and satisfaction.
Running underpowered tests: making decisions without enough data.
Over-optimization: winning small surface-level tweaks without addressing bigger UX issues.
